Dental Hygiene Services
Good oral hygiene and regular professional hygiene care are integral to the establishment and maintenance of oral health.
Nearly everyone, even with very good oral hygiene habits, will have a slow but steady build-up of tartar on their teeth. Tartar is a mineralised, hard material that forms at the deepest layers of plaque as well as from the mineral deposits from saliva. This build-up, particularly when just below the gum line, will cause inflammation in the gum at the level where the gum meets the tooth, and this is referred to as gingivitis. Left untreated, this gingivitis can evolve into the more damaging periodontitis, which can lead to gradual loss of gum and bone attachment to the involved tooth or teeth. In advanced cases, periodontitis can lead to the need for invasive surgical treatment, gum infections, and even tooth loss.
A Dental Hygienist is degree qualified and has been highly trained in the prevention and treatment of gingivitis and its sequelae. At our practice, we highly recommend that all our clients see a hygienist on a regular basis. To that end, all our registered patients are placed on a recall, or re-care, system which ensures they are seen at an interval that is appropriate to their needs. Most patients will do a dental hygiene service once or twice a year. Some require more frequent care and some can get away with less, depending on how quickly they build up deposits on their teeth, their home habits, their susceptibility to gum disease, and other factors.
Keep your teeth! See a hygienist regularly.
