Our Practice
Dentistry on Merivale is a long-standing practice, most recently operated by Dr. Michael Olmstead, an exceptionally skilled practitioner with an excellent reputation across New Zealand. Once Mike made the decision to (semi) retire he set out to find a clinician with the same practice philosophy who would be keen to carry on in this very successful practice.
In February 2010 the practice was taken over by Dr. David Walsh, a dentist with whom Dr. Olsmstead had worked side by side with for 2 years when they each first arrived in NZ several years ago. With very similar training, experience, and professional belief systems, the transition was seamless and Michael and David remain good friends and professional colleagues.

David is a 1987 graduate of the University of Manitoba, Canada. Since graduation, he has practiced full-time, with a special interest in utilizing the latest technology and techniques to provide the best possible cosmetic and comprehensive restorative dental care. He believes in amalgam free dentistry and all treatment is centered on his patient’s overall health and well-being.
In search of warmer climes, he immigrated to this lovely country with his young family in 2003 and absolutely loves living here. Now well established in NZ, both professionally and personally, David looks forward to many years of providing excellent treatment to those that entrust their dental care to him.
Hygienists
Shona (DipDentHyg)
Shona arrived from Scotland in 2005, and has worked with David in this country for most of that time.
With her unparalleled energy and enthusiasm, not to mention her huge wealth of experience as a hygienist, she is a truly exceptional addition to the practice. Few of those that know her are willing to see anyone else for their gum care and she has quickly earned a well-deserved reputation as one of the best in her profession.
Amy (OHT)
Amy Lee has now joined the team bringing with her many years of experience as an oral health therapist and hygienist. Her gentle manner and depth of knowledge are a welcome and expert addition to our growing team of professionals.
Ravy
As a recently graduated oral health therapist, Ravy loves her profession. Her kind and joyful manner coupled with her knowledge and skills makes her a welcome addition to our team.
Ravy is very interested in taking a holistic approach in her role as a dental hygienist as well as when providing restorative treatment for children

I love dentistry and my job. I have been lucky enough to support a good number of people within the dental network for many years, spanning from Australia, USA and now in NZ, either as an assistant or front of house.
I always look forward to seeing a happy smile and positive outcomes.
Vera
Vera is Dave’s surgery nurse. She joined us recently and comes with a wealth of dental and medical experience locally and from her home country Germany.
She is trained as an anesthetic technician however has chosen the dental field as a way forward in New Zealand, which she has called home since July 2019. Indispensable in the surgery and always with a ready smile, Vera is a fantastic addition to the team.

Wendy
Wendy is the lady with the smile that will greet you at the door as well as on the phone as she welcomes our clients to the practice every day. She too has been involved in dental practice in various roles for over 30 years and puts that knowledge to good use as she manages the practical side of our patents’ treatment needs.
Wendy has worked with David and Shona for the last several years and is always happy to answer any questions or help in any way she can. She is a remarkable person and the team is lucky to have her in her vital role here.

As one of our front office administrators, I‘m here to ensure that every aspect of your visit is seamless, from the moment you arrive until you leave. I’ll manage your appointments, assist with your inquiries, and coordinate our team to provide you with the best possible care.

With many years’ experience in the medical and dental field, Cheryl has joined the team with a primary role as new client coordinator and front office communication.
You may also see her in the surgical areas helping with logistics and clinical processes. Her kind and open manner make her a very welcome addition to our growing team.
